About

When Ted Turner purchased Vermejo in 1996, his goal was to restore and preserve the native ecosystems that support the diversity of life on our planet. Now, a generation later, Ted Turner Reserves, Vermejo is over 550,000 acres of majestic wilderness located in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado beckoning travelers to immerse themselves in the rejuvenating power of nature rewilded. With climates ranging from high desert to snowcapped alpine tundra, 19 fishable lakes and over 30 miles of streams, Vermejo offers unparalleled opportunities to explore. Its diverse landscape is home to a wide variety of wildlife including elk, bison, black bears and mountain lions. Whether riding horseback through open fields, exploring turn-of-the-century charcoal kilns, or fly fishing for native Rio Grande cutthroat trout, Vermejo has something for everyone.

Conservation:

At Vermejo, our most important work is to restore and preserve the beauty and biodiversity of the natural world. We are proud of our success in the repopulation of imperiled American bison and Rio Grande cutthroat trout, and that is just the beginning. During your visit, you can see the work of the Turner Endangered Species Fund and the property’s natural resources and biodiversity specialists, learn more about the work they’re doing on the property, and understand how your visit is helping protect and restore wildlife and the land.

Accommodations:

Whether you’re looking for an intimate historic cottage, an eco-friendly mountaintop lodge, or even a turn-of-the-century mansion, Vermejo has the ideal accommodation to match both your party size and preferences. Developed at the turn of the 20th century by a Chicago grain speculator who fulfilled his dreams of Westward expansion at Vermejo. Casa Grande is a 25,000-square-foot step back in time to 1900s luxury and elegance. The surrounding grounds, guest cottages, and main lodge complete the experience and the story of the headquarters area.

Tucked away in the high country, Costilla Fishing Lodge, is the perfect home base for excursions into untamed wilderness. Constructed using the property’s own timber and stone, this solar powered eco-friendly lodge is certified LEED Silver. Enjoy incredible views from the expansive porch, relax in front of the grand stone fireplace, and enjoy meals from a dedicated chef.

Activities: Endless opportunities to connect with nature at Vermejo include trout fishing in our 19 lakes, and the opportunity to catch the rare native Rio Grande cutthroat trout in our 30 miles of streams, but fishing is just one of the ways to connect with nature here. We also offer endless trails for hiking and biking, horseback riding, shooting sports, archery, geocaching, disc golf, and wildlife and history tours.

Dining: Savor meals inspired by the seasons and the Southwest, with ingredients fresh from our greenhouse and neighboring farms. Enjoy your choice from the lodge menu and daily specials, or perhaps a lakeside or veranda cookout.
