Virtuoso or Amex FHR: which gets better perks?
The perks are close; the guarantee and the cost are not. Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts adds daily breakfast for two, a $100 credit and Wi-Fi to every booking, guarantees a 4pm check-out, and offers noon check-in and an upgrade when available. It needs the Platinum Card, $895 a year. Virtuoso through Stay Perks adds daily breakfast for two at every one of the 134 hotels we reviewed in August 2026 and, at nearly all of them, a credit (typically $100), plus an upgrade and early check-in or late check-out when available. It has no annual fee and no booking fee: you pay the hotel directly.
So FHR is the better choice if you already hold the Platinum Card or need a late check-out you can count on. Virtuoso through Stay Perks is the better choice if you would rather not pay a card fee for hotel perks, or want an advisor to arrange the stay.

Where Amex FHR is better
Late check-out is guaranteed: 4pm on every Fine Hotels + Resorts booking, where Virtuoso's is when available. The $100 credit and Wi-Fi come with every FHR booking, while a Virtuoso credit is on 93% of the 134 hotels we reviewed in August 2026 and Wi-Fi is listed by 7% of them. Prepaid FHR stays earn 5X Amex points, plus hotel loyalty points and qualifying nights where the hotel has a program, and Platinum cardholders get up to $600 a year back on prepaid FHR and Hotel Collection stays.
Where Virtuoso through Stay Perks is better
It costs nothing to use: no card, no annual fee and no booking fee on a hotel stay. You pay the hotel directly, at its own rate, with the card you choose, and that card earns its usual points. A person books it: Geisel Power, a Virtuoso advisor who books through Travel Experts, Inc., sends a written quote with the room, rate, taxes and total, the cancellation policy and the perks. Stay Perks covers 2,000+ Virtuoso hotels.
Who each one suits
FHR suits Platinum cardholders, who pay the fee either way, and anyone who must keep the room until 4pm. Chase The Edit, which gives breakfast for two and a $100 credit but makes the upgrade, early check-in and late check-out all subject to availability, suits Sapphire Reserve cardholders ($795 a year) who book online. Virtuoso through Stay Perks suits travelers who would rather not pay a card fee for hotel perks, or who want an advisor to arrange the stay.

Hotels pay a Virtuoso advisor a commission after your stay, so a hotel booking through Stay Perks carries no booking fee and no annual fee. You pay the hotel directly, at its own rate, and the Virtuoso amenities are added to the booking. Your written quote states the room, rate, taxes and total, the hotel's cancellation policy, and which amenities are included and which are on request.

Good to know.
Virtuoso or Amex FHR: which is better?
It depends on what you need and which card you hold. Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts is better if you need a late check-out you can count on: it guarantees 4pm on every booking, and the $100 credit and Wi-Fi come with every stay. Virtuoso through Stay Perks is better if you would rather not pay a card fee for hotel perks: FHR needs the Platinum Card, $895 a year, while a Virtuoso hotel booking through Stay Perks has no annual fee and no booking fee, and you pay the hotel directly. Both add daily breakfast for two and an upgrade when available.
Can I combine Virtuoso and FHR on one stay?
No. Amex gives Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits only on a booking made through American Express Travel, and its terms say they are not combinable with other offers unless indicated. Virtuoso amenities come with a booking made through a Virtuoso advisor. A reservation is made through one or the other, so one stay carries one set of perks.
Do I need a credit card to get Virtuoso perks?
Not a particular card, and no card fee. Virtuoso amenities come with booking through a Virtuoso advisor, not with a card program. Through Stay Perks a hotel booking carries no fee: Geisel Power quotes the stay in writing, and you pay the hotel directly, at its own rate.
Is late checkout guaranteed with Virtuoso?
No. Early check-in or late check-out is a Virtuoso amenity at 99% of the 134 Virtuoso hotels whose amenities we reviewed in August 2026, but it is subject to availability, and your written quote marks it as on request. If you must keep the room until 4pm, Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts is the program that guarantees it.
Can I still earn my Amex or Chase points?
Yes, on what you pay the hotel: you pay the hotel directly, so the card you pay with earns its usual points. The higher travel rates, 5X on the Platinum Card and 8X on the Sapphire Reserve, apply only to bookings made through Amex Travel or Chase Travel.
